T019 – Disc Rotor Machining – Slotted & Cross Drilled

The introduction of slotted and cross drilled rotors has left technicians asking the question “Can they be machined?” The answer is “Yes – but there are some important things to remember”.
 
When machining any disc rotor it is important to make sure that all the mounting faces are clean and undamaged on both the rotors and the tooling. Always make sure that the tool tips are sharp and setup directly opposed to each other.
 

When machining slotted or cross drilled rotors it is extremely important to remember to always use the slowest feed rate and take the smallest cut.
 
DO NOT take 1 cut to clean up the disc and then a fine finishing cut as you will damage both the disc rotor and your tool tips. If you need to take 5 or so fine cut passes to clean up the face of the disc then that is ok.
 
Once you have finished machining the disc rotor, very lightly use 240 grit emery paper to smooth off the fine grooves on the face of the disc rotor. Clean the friction faces with a suitable cleaner like liquid acetone or brake clean. Never use petroleum or silicon based cleaners as they will leave a residue on the disc rotor that will impede brake performance.
 
Remember Always check rotor thickness & replace if on or under minimum thickness after machining.

Once again the ConroyMotorsport Team DBA Honda Integra Type S not only won its Class in the Eastern Creek 6 Hour round of the Australian Manufacturers Endurance Championship held over the Weekend of December 9/10, but was first non Turbo to finish and was 8th Outright in a field of 23 starters.

Driven by Terry Conroy –Jake Williams and Todd Betland they battled throughout the race finishing one lap ahead of Australian GT Champion Mark Eddy and Francious Jourey’s similar Honda and 28 laps ahead of the third placed Celica of Matt Mc Gill.

To add to the success Jake Williams two first placings in the Team DBA Honda at the Sandown 500 in September and Eastern Creek gave him and the Team enough points to be awarded Class D 2011 Australian Performance Endurance Champions, and the 2011 Australian Manufacturers Endurance Champions.

Conroy Motorsport and Disc Brakes Australia have had an ongoing association for the past twenty years, which has included extensive Disc Rotor testing, making it possibly the longest team sponsorship arrangement in Australian Motorsport.

Their 2011achivements also marked the first National Title accreditation of DBA’s Radical T 3 Disc Rotor that Team Owner Terry Conroy acknowledges contributed to the Hondas outstanding braking
performance.

To further emphasise the T 3′s durability it was initially fitted for the 2010 Bathurst 12 Hour with a Class win following up with top ten and Class wins at the 6 and 8 Hour Enduros in 2010 at Eastern Creek Raceway.

The Conroy Motorsport Team DBA Honda is recognised as one of the best prepared Teams in Production Car Endurance Racing In Australia having a 100% finishing record in the 2010 Bathurst 12 Hour,both Eastern Creek 6 and 8 hour Enduros, and the Sandown 500.

Disc Brakes Australia is pleased to announce that we have won Three major awards, including the top prize at the prestigious AAAA industry awards in May 2011. The Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association’s biannual awards are highly prized, and in 2011 it was “gold, gold, gold” for DBA with two other awards also being presented.

1. DBA was given the AAAA’s top award for Best New Performance Product for their all new T2 & T3 rotor designs.
With distinctive ‘T pattern’ curved slots on each face and a host of other unique features, these rotors introduce major performance and practical advantages to motorists. This is the same prestigious award won by the company 14 years ago when DBA shook up the ‘direct replacement’ brake market by offering the first affordable cross-drilled and slotted rotors.

The new rotors have built up a motorsport pedigree before they were even ready for sale. The Disc Brakes Australia Honda Integra Type-S of Terry Conroy, Bob Hughes and Gerry Burges ran Club Spec T3 discs in prototype form in the Eastern Creek Eight Hour at the end of 2010. Their car achieved first in class and fourth outright. Shortly afterwards, the organizers of the spectacular V8 Ute Australia series completed their own trials and announced the new rotors as the standard fitment for the 2011 season.

The new T-Series rotors can be fitted on the left or right and will make their debut at the upcoming SEMA and PRI Shows later this year.

3. Completing the triple crown, DBA Managing Director Phillip Joseph was inducted into the AAAA Hall of Fame.

In presenting the award, AAAA representatives praised Mr. Joseph’s strong commitment to the industry and to road safety. Mr. Joseph has run Disc Brakes Australia for more than 30 years, overseeing its rise from a small spare parts maker with a handful of part numbers to a major international supplier of aftermarket and original equipment rotors for hundreds of models. During that time, he has been a passionate advocate on behalf of Australian manufacturing, and a regular campaigner for improved road safety and higher vehicle maintenance standards.
