What is Kangaroo Paw?
Overview

Disc Brakes Australia (DBA) is an Australian owned designer, manufacturer and marketer of disc brake rotors and brake drums which celebrates its 30th year of operation in 2007.

It has grown with the market over three full decades, from a time when four-wheel disc were a rarity through to today’s almost universal choice of disc brakes front and rear.

The company’s manufacturing plant is located in Silverwater (Sydney) NSW and has long held QS9000 and ISO9001 quality certification. It starts 2007, however, with attainment of ISO/TS16949, the OE ‘gold standard’ accreditation.

DBA’s Sydney plant brings together the latest automated manufacturing techniques with a highly trained staff. The company also has field agents covering all Australian states plus the US, European and Middle Eastern markets.

Kangaroo Paw system

DBA’s patented Kangaroo Paw ventilation system provides a much more efficient method of keeping the rotors cool under the heaviest braking applications.

Using a series of 144 diamond and tear-drop patterned pillars (or columns) instead of conventional straight cooling vanes, the design increases cooling efficiency by up to 20 per cent when compared with most other ventilated disc rotors.

As well as promoting cooler running, the Kangaroo Paw system reduces warping, run-out and vibration. Because conventional ventilation channels are straight, at high temperatures discs can “balloon” and swell between the vanes. The Kangaroo Paw pillars are evenly spread across the disc face and make the rotor stronger, more stable and more consistent in operation.

Direct Replacement

All DBA rotors are direct replacement. There is no need to relocate or modify existing calipers, or add brackets. This means the DBA solution is less expensive than other major brake upgrades, yet it will often yield just as impressive a result.

TSP

All 4000 and 5000 series discs feature Thermal Stability Profiling (TSP). This proprietary process involves treating the discs in such a way as to remove stresses from the rotor. The combination of TSP and the Kangaroo Paw design has often cured problem vehicles where owners were experiencing warping and disc run-out after only a few thousand miles.

Thermo-Graphic Heat Paint

All 4000 and 5000 series rotors have thermo-graphic paint markings, an ideal aid to those who are serious about performance. Applied to the outer diameter of the rotor, this marking system indicates the maximum temperature being reached, providing a guide to whether your braking system is performing to expectations and whether other aspects (such as brake bias) need to be attended to.

Street series

DBA rotors can be supplied in standard slotted or cross drilled-and-slotted formats. Slotting improves brake pad bite, reduces glazing and removes gases, impurities and resins from the friction material, and slotted-only discs are recommended for serious street performance and track use. The unique cross drilled-and-slotted combination offers similar braking performance. The attractive drilled pattern further improves “out gassing” and helps create more even pad wear. Each drilled hole has been chamfered to remove stress points and reduce the incidents of cracking (rotors and pads always need to be bedded in as per manufacturer’s specifications, however).

Experience

With 30 years of experience, one of the industry’s most modern factories, and millions of cars around the world fitted with its rotors, you can be assured that DBA has the expertise and facilities to deliver the look, the feel, the quality and the performance to improve any street automotive braking system.
